Early Horsemanship

Lance Johnston of Johnston Performance Horses, was raised in New Cuyama on his family’s cattle ranch. He began starting colts for his family and friends at the age of 13. To pay for school at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, Lance trained and worked as a horseshoer.

When Lance was 8 or 9 a family friend brought him back a baseball cap from the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. He remembers thinking “I am going to win this someday!” Lance’s first show horse was a mustang from the Black Mountain herd in California named Kasey.  He trained this gelding on his own. He started competing with Kasey in reining classes and once he had access to cows, moved into showing in reined cowhorse events.

Dreams to Reality

Lance certainly has made good on the goal he set as a young boy.  He has qualified for the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open finals 14 times. His lifetime NRCHA earnings exceed $800,000 and he has won the Reserve World Championship at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity.  Lance claims one of his most gratifying awards is being a Champion of the Open Bridle class and 3 time Champion of the Salinas Open Hackamore event – where the reined cow horse discipline “..all began”.

Lance attributes his success to the support his parents gave him at a young age, his wife who encouraged him to begin showing on Kasey and NRCHA horsemen Ted Robinson. Lance explained that Ted was at the height of his career when he started showing and Ted always treated him as an equal, “ ..a true gentleman”.

Lance currently trains out of his own facility in Lindsay, California. He believes that participating in our Wild Spayed Filly Futurity is the perfect way to support our cause and pay homage to Kasey by training another mustang from the reined cow horse discipline.
