INAUGURAL FRIEND OF THE LAND- MAY 2021

PROTECT THE HARVEST'S "FRIEND OF THE LAND"

Rick and Trish Leone, owners of Peak View Ranch in Colorado are true friends of the land. Rick is a native of Colorado and the Leone family raise cattle, sheep, horses, and just about every other critter, including peacocks.

As true stewards of the land, many conservation practices including rotational grazing, annual grass inventory, timed calving to coincide with green grass, and extensive planned rest periods are used to optimize prairie grasses and manage to prevent erosion and damage from extreme temperatures and low annual precipitation (9-12"/yr) in the semi-arid desert conditions of southeast Colorado.

In addition to ranching, 4-H is a big part of life on Peak View Ranch. The Leones give back thru 4-H involvement as it provides a great opportunity to teach kids about livestock, conservation and resource management, sound animal husbandry, health care, judging, and more. Not only their own kids, but also kids from town keep 4-H projects at the ranch. Teaching the next generation about land and livestock is the best way to protect the land. Stewardship and conservation go hand in hand.

Finally, Rick is a veterinarian and graduated CSU in 1988. He and Trish own and operate Peak View Animal Hospital a mixed animal practice. Rick has served on the state veterinary board. The clinic has and continues to offer internships to veterinary students so they can gain hands-on experience in a rural mixed animal setting. These experiences shape soon-to-be veterinarians and enable them to be prepared for field emergencies as well as in-hospital ones.

Congratulations to the Leone Family from all of us at Protect The Harvest!
