The balance between healthy wild horse herds and ecologically sound public rangelands is in jeopardy. Since receiving federal protection in 1971, the nationwide wild horse population has grown to nearly 82,000 animals, which is over triple the number that can survive along with wildlife, livestock and other uses of the land. In addition, no highly effective, easily delivered and affordable fertility-control methods are currently available to manage wild horse and burro populations.

The BLM is committed to the protection and management of wild horses and burros on public lands. This new research is an effort to develop effective management tools so wild horses and burros on public lands are healthy and available for future generations. The BLM is proposing a research project to evaluate the safety, complication rate and feasibility of ovariectomy via colpotomy on wild horse mares, and the impacts to mare and band behavior once the treated animals are returned to the range. This video shows how the ovariectomy (removal of the ovaries) via colpotomy (internal incision by way of the vagina) procedure is completed.
