FARMERS MARKETS THRIVING IN U.S.
Many of you have spent a significant amount of time at a farmers market in your home town or city. You may be selling your own products, or simply shopping to stock your shelves and fridges at home. No matter the case, farmers markets can be a major hub of activity on any given day of the week. There are multiple reasons why farmer markets are a preferable consumer experience. For one, it allows the general public to have direct access to those who grow the food that is being sold. This is a major benefit for many who are curious about how food is grown. Likewise, smaller farms can sell directly to customers, thus allowing them to sell at a more ideal price for them and cut out having to sell products on a larger scale. For those who choose to buy produce at a farmers market, the result in food taste and quality can be very apparent. Fruits and vegetables are allowed to fully ripen in the field, and they avoid being shipped long distances. It’s food in its purest form. You also may be able to see a wider variety of foods than in your average supermarket. The diversity is a major selling point for those who wish to sell at the farmers market. In fact, many of the local farmers know their products so well that they can actually suggest delicious recipes to include them in. Additionally, farmers markets provide a fun family atmosphere. It can be very interesting to interact with different growers to learn about the process, and some markets even turn it into a carnival atmosphere with music and other forms of entertainment. The sense of community at these markets is strong. It’s difficult to find people in bad moods at these events! Due to these reasons and more, farmers markets in the United States are witnessing tremendous success, as more and more pop up every year. The total number of farmers markets in the U.S. has nearly tripled since the start of this century, according to the USDA’s Economic Research Service. In 2000, the number was 2,863. Today, that number is an incredible 8,476!
