IRS INCREASES SCRUTINY OF POLITICAL ORGANIZATIONS BUT HSUS SLIDES

According to an article released yesterday by the Daily Caller, IRS Exempt Organizations Division director Lois Lerner is also a proud member and supporter of the Humane Society of the United States [HSUS]. Lerner, who made the headlines recently for her apology over the IRS's ideologically-based scrutiny of singled-out political organizations, has caused quite the stir and led many to question whether or not proper action has ever been taken to address concerns raised by government officials about America's largest animal rights group.  The Daily Caller notes that Lerner's biography states she "is an active member of the Humane Society of the United States..." In 2010, reports from HumaneWatch.com cited letters that were written and signed by Members of Congress, like this one sent from Missouri Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer, asking Lerner and the IRS to investigate the questionable tax-exempt status of the HSUS. HSUS publicly displays their own tax reports, but they seem to hide activity like lobbying, spending money attacking and targeting elected officials who impede their radical agendas, and ballot initiative campaigns attacking agriculture, sportsmen, and animal owners by grouping them in one broad category - Advocacy and Public Policy.  In 2011, this category accounted for half of their entire expenditures for the year. HSUS specifically states under their Advocacy and Public Policy section that they spend money, "Targeting consumers to modify their spending and lifestyle habits in favor of humane products." HSUS, 2010 Form 990, pg. 4 Digging through their reports, you'll also find that they spend less than 1% of their entire $150 Million-plus budget supporting actual animal shelters. One would be led to think that with the title "Humane Society" and running fundraising commercials showing the innocent dogs and cats in need of rescue, that they would actually support local animal shelters. Unfortunately, this is hardly the case. HSUS's repeated attacks on America's farmers and sportsmen and the elected officials who dare to protect their rights and our heritage prove that enacting their radical agenda is more important than actually saving the lives of those poor dogs and cats that tug on everyone's heart strings. So let's go back and take a look at the timeline of the IRS investigation scandal. Lerner stated that most of the targeting was going on around the time of the 2010 election cycle, and again, this is roughly the same time in which she held recorded meetings with key members of Congress asking her to investigate the HSUS. The requests and demands have been made, but why haven't their been any reports? The IRS can't comment on any "on-going" investigations, nor can they confirm or deny that they've even started an investigation. More than two years in the making, and with admitted reports that the IRS specifically targeted organizations based on their ideological allegiances, the mind begins to wonder if Lerner's ties to HSUS should be called into question. Only time will tell, but hardworking American taxpayers deserve answers. Government shouldn't be picking favorites and the IRS should be applying the same rules to everyone.
