NIKKI REED AND OTHER CELEBS GO AFTER COSTCO OVER EGGS
Actress Nikki Reed (Twilight series, Sleepy Hollow) joins other celebrities such as comedian Bill Maher, actor Ryan Gosling, and singer Sia in calling out Costco in demanding that the mega retailer cease the sale of eggs from caged hens and switch to only cage-free eggs.
Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) worked with Reed on a short video making the appeal to the general public. Citing McDonald's recent decision to transition to cage-free egg use, she claims that cage confinement is cruel to animals.
In the video, HSUS shows footage from an undercover investigation that was released in June from the farm of a Costco supplier in Pennsylvania that supposedly shows animal cruelty. Much like other video "evidence" HSUS has used in the past, the acquisition of the video and its properties can be called into question due to the animal rights group's spotty history with edited footage.
Even if the incident in question was strong evidence of animal cruelty, this is one farm. It is not fair to other egg suppliers to lump all into the same category. Chickens are kept in smaller spaces because open spaces leave them susceptible to greater risk of disease and predatory attacks. That in itself is not cruelty.
While Ms. Reed and her celebrity pals may have good intentions, they are misguided and these individuals are being worked over by HSUS's emotional appeals. The fact is, they are in the "Food Elite" and have little-to-no concern for the price of grocery items. Much of the rest of the country does not share that luxury. Low income families rely on cheap animal protein in order to sustain themselves.
Consumers in California and throughout the country have already felt the sting from cage-free and enriched cage legislation, as Proposition 2 and AB 1437 went into effect there at the beginning of this year. Since then, prices have inflated to nearly double that of just a year prior because of the cost of transitioning to the new systems for egg producers.
As more retailers cave in to the animal rights industry's pressure, egg (and meat) prices will continue to soar, putting a strain on Americans. Unfortunately, groups like HSUS are able to reach the public through celebrity involvement in their campaigns, which allows their agenda talking points to be seen as facts by the uninformed masses.
