State Constitutional Amendments Ensuring the Right to Hunt, Fish, & Farm

STATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS ENSURING THE RIGHT TO HUNT, FISH, & FARM

So far this year, we have seen an increased effort in states across the Midwest to develop lasting constitutional protections for farmers, ranchers, and sportsmen. These efforts are directly in response to threats made by radical animal rights groups, like the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Missouri, Oklahoma, and Indiana all currently have legislation drafted and placed on their legislative calendars, to be considered during the current legislative session. The three proposed constitutional amendments share common language with the purpose to "forever preserve" the rights and freedoms for traditional America. On December 27th, 2012, Representative Jason Smith (MO), released a statement explaining his position as sponsor for the Missouri amendment:

“One way to ensure out-of-state special interests don’t pass rules restricting the number of cows that a rancher can own, or pass rules making it illegal to hunt deer, is to protect the right to hunt, fish and farm in our state’s constitution.”
Several agriculture and sportsmen's groups are beginning to work together, concentrating efforts to fight back against the animal rights groups. Combining the right to hunt, fish, and farm into one constitutional amendment allows for a streamlined proposal that would eventually give voters a chance to approve all three at one time. As we mentioned, the proposals are all very similar.  Here is how Indiana's proposed amendment defines the Right to Hunt, Fish and Farm:
"The people have a right to hunt, fish, harvest game, or engage in the agricultural or commercial production of meat, fish, poultry, or dairy products, which is a valued part of our heritage and shall be forever preserved for the public good, subject only to laws prescribed by the General Assembly and rules prescribed by virtue of the authority of the General Assembly. Hunting and fishing shall be the preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife. This section shall not be construed to limit the application of any provision of law relating to trespass or property rights."
Animal rights groups will not stop until they've successfully forced their radical views on the rest of us, and that's why preserving our traditional American freedoms and the 'Right to Hunt, Fish, & Farm' is a worthy and necessary cause. We applaud State Senator Brent Steele (IN), State Representative Scott Biggs (OK), and State Representative Jason Smith (MO) for introducing legislation in their states and taking a stand on behalf of farmers, hunters and fishermen.  If you live in one of these three states, we encourage you to stand with them, and for those of you who live in other parts of the country, we would urge you to call for and support similar legislation in your own state.
