USDA Head Tom Vilsack Set to be Grilled on 2015 Dietary Guidelines by House Ag Committee

USDA HEAD TOM VILSACK SET TO BE GRILLED ON 2015 DIETARY GUIDELINES BY HOUSE AG COMMITTEE

Vilsack Testimony   On Wednesday, the House Ag Committee will have a hearing to discuss the conceptualization and implementation of the 2015 Dietary Guidelines. Ag Secretary and USDA Chief Tom Vilsack and Health of Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell will be on hand to answer the many questions that will inevitably be asked about their dubious process for developing these guidelines, which are set to be finalized by the end of the year. The scientific merit of these guidelines are under scrutiny following a report from the USDA/Human Services Advisory Committee that suggested Americans should eat less red meat. There is a wealth of evidence that disproves this claim and shows that the vitamins, nutrients, and protein found in red meat fulfill a well-balanced diet when consumed in healthy proportions. Tom Vilsack has a clear bias against the animal agriculture industry. His past ties to Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) call into question his loyalty, especially considering the years of work HSUS has put into attacking the industry. From our previous article on the issue:

"If you’re familiar with his past, you know that Tom Vilsack’s history with animal agriculture is dubious. He was first placed in this important position based on little more than his home state being Iowa, which gave him a pro-agricultural reputation that he hadn’t individually earned. His relationship with agriculture is not nearly as strong as his relationship with agriculture’s ongoing enemy, the Humane Society of the United States. HSUS backed Christie Vilsack, Tom’s wife, in her unsuccessful challenge of Rep. Steve King (R-IA). He has been in cahoots with them ever since, allowing their voices to be heard on major agriculture decisions. The USDA even supported Meatless Mondays in schools because of this alliance. More recently, Tom Vilsack controversially supported an overhaul of the widely successful Beef Checkoff program, which could’ve resulted in the Beef Checkoff board being stocked with HSUS representatives, a devastating move against the cattle industry. Luckily, this move was thwarted after weeks of public outcry."
It's no surprise, then, that an overwhelming majority of those in the Ag industry place little-to-no trust in Vilsack's decision-making processes, a feeling that is shared by many lawmakers including House Ag Committee Chairman Mike Conaway. He feels that there are several concerns with dietary recommendations that need to be addressed immediately. If these dietary guidelines are not changed, there is even a chance that the House Ag Committee would choose to defund the implementation, which would essentially negate its effects. Until that time arrives, Tom Vilsack and Sylvia Burwell will have to answer for overstepping their boundaries and for the committee using an appalling lack of proper nutritional science in their report. The hearing, scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, will (hopefully) go a long way to answering these many questions. You can watch the testimony on C-SPAN3.
