Washington State Pet Owner Alert from PIJAC

Council members in Pierce County, Washington are considering adopting a proposed pet sale ban ordinance at their meeting on February 28, 2022. Please contact the Council members immediately using this form and ask them to OPPOSE the pet sale ban.

What’s at stake:

The proposed ordinance would prohibit retail pet stores in the city from selling or offering for sale a dog or cat.

This will harm consumer choice and do nothing to stop inhumane breeding. It will also worsen the health of companion animals, and burden pet owners with more financial costs associated with their pet’s health while decreasing consumer protections, and limiting the information that is made available to them regarding the health and history of their pet. Responsible breeders and pet stores offer future pet owners the ability to choose a pet that is the best fit for their specific needs, and legal protections for them and their animals.

We all agree that bad breeders need to be shut down, but this misguided bill will not do that. In reality, the bad breeders this ordinance targets will go untouched while responsible pet stores pay the price and will be forced to close their doors and lay off employees. Families who are seeking a specific breed of dog will be driven to unregulated sources and could fall victim to unscrupulous sellers.

What you can do:

  1. Use the form below to send a message to Pierce County Council Members urging them to OPPOSE the pet sale ban.
  2. Spread the word: Forward to email to your key contacts in Washington and ask them to take action.
